Chapter 16

We landed in the San Francisco airport. Upon exiting the plane—besides being overwhelmed by the sheer number of people embarking and disembarking the planes, muscling for position in food lines, scrambling to find entertainment or gate information—I smelled werewolf, and it wasn’t us. Alex had never stopped using the bear soap, and while we traveled, I had used it, too. Why bring other soap on our trip?

We headed toward the exit, and I found the source: a man, a woman, and a teenage girl. I grasped Alex’s arm and dragged them until we were directly behind them, and I could overhear their conversation.

It sounded like they were in the middle of a disagreement. The man was shaking his head. “I don’t want to call back home for the number and searching our bag will take too long. Let’s rent a car, take a few days to explore, and then we’ll check in.”

The girl’s voice was uncertain. “Is that safe?”

The older woman took her hand. “I’m sure it’s safe. Look, we’ll sight-see from the redwoods down to Santa Cruz. After that…”

It was enough. “There’s no ‘after that.’ It isn’t safe.”

They stopped in their tracks and spun to face me, their expressions and scents hostile. I could sense more than see them sniff.

Though they’d been speaking softly, softer than even Alex could probably hear, I was pretty certain this family were some of the new members of our Pack, and I had to warn them of the dangers in the area.

The man’s eyes narrowed as he looked me up and down, irritated. The woman looked back and forth between me and her phone while the girl slipped behind the couple. Smart girl.

Top lip lifting in a partial snarl, the man’s chin rose, and he glared down his nose at me. His hands fisted as he sneered. “It isn’t polite to listen in on other people’s conversations, girl.”

“Fair. I have a ride. The drivers are José and Bevin, maybe they could provide my credentials since right now mine are…” I raised my arm to my nose to sniff it, “…hidden.”

The man looked unconvinced, but the woman held out the phone to him as she faced me. “Are you Jade Stone? Daughter of Hazel and River Stone?”

Alex’s jaw dropped. “Jade, how do these people know you? How do you know them?”

With one hand on their shoulder, I held my other out. “Can we head out to the car? This can all be explained, I promise. You can still take your few days, a week even, to tour, but let’s do it safely, please. I’d hate for your first experience in our fair territory to be dangerous.”

The girl finally poked her head out from behind her mom’s back. “But how did you know we were coming today?”

Throwing my hands up and out in a rainbow pattern, I wiggled my fingers. “Magic!”

Alex’s face dropped as they deadpanned, “We just flew in from my family’s place in Iowa…pure chance.”

The girl’s parents laughed.

“So, I’m Jade, this is Alex.
